Mission ‘Jewelstone’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 18-Oct-2015
100% Syrah, hand-picked fruit from a 1 ha parcel from the company’s Mere Road vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, from 9 y.o. vines, fermented with whole berries to 13.8% alc., the wine spending 24 days on skins post ferment and aged 13 months in 33% new French oak. Very full, purple-hued black-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is well-packed with deep and concentrated, ripe aromas of blackberry fruit with a complex and funky layering of savoury, funky game and reductive notes, along with dark herbs, earth, black ink, and black pepper. The aromatics exude fruit richness and vitality. Medium-full bodied, sweet, juicy and succulent flavours of black fruits are entwined with lifted black florals, and savoury, game and minerally reductive layers. Earth and inkiness add to the complexing notes. The mouthfeel is plush and mouthfilling and balanced by very fine-grained, powdery tannins providing considerable structure and grip. The palate has a degree of poise, with vitality and underlying acid energy, and the wine flows to a soft and fine-textured finish with piquant spicy notes. This is a rich and succulent, plush Syrah with black fruits and complexing game and reductive notes, and a very fine-textured and structured palate. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dished over the next 9-10+ years. 4,400 bottles produced. 19.0-/20 Oct 2015 RRP $49.99 Full, very dark, near-saturated purple-hued black-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly proportioned, but very tightly concentrated with intense aromas of black berry essence, ripe black plums and Asian spices along with black pepper, balsam, black mineral and tarry detail. A suggestion of reduction adds to the complexity. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation, but reveals intense and finely concentrated flavours of succulent black berried fruits melded with black plums, spice and balsamic elements. The fruit sweetness is supported and balanced by very fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction forming a refined, flowing, dry-textured mouthfeel. This has excellent linearity, and the flavours of liquorice, spice, tar and minerals are carried to a very long, aromatic finish. This is an elegantly rich and concentrated, black-fruited Syrah with mineral and spice complexity, and a very fine-grained, textural palate. Serve with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 7-10+ years.
