Mission ‘Jewelstone’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Aug-2015
Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour. This has a soft, gently full nose of ripe blackberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit aromas subtly interwoven with iron-earth and mineral detail. Some redcurrant fruit lift and spice nuances emerge as the aromatics build in depth. The nose is very refined in expression. Medium-full bodied and elegant in proportion, the palate features a rich, well-concentrated core of sweetly ripe dark red berry and redcurrant fruit alongside dark plums. The fruit richness is balanced by considerable extraction and firm tannin structure. The mouthfeel has richness, vibrancy, grip and texture, with good underlying power and drive, carrying through to a concentrated, long lingering finish of black fruits. This is a well-proportioned, rich and textured ripe Merlot. Match with grilled and roasted lamb and beef, and with hard cheeses over the next 8-10 years. A blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc from the Mere Road and Gimblett Road vineyards, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20 days maceration post ferment and aged 18 months in seasoned French oak barrels. 3,300 bottles produced. 18.5/20 Aug 2015 RRP $49.99
