Sparkling Wine from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Aug-2015
Straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale on the rim. The bubble is fine and persistent. This has a fresh, elegant and lively nose with piquant and lifted white stonefruit and floral aromas, along with nuances of minerals. Fresh and steely, mouthwatering yeast and lees detail unfold in the glass. Dryish to taste and light-medium bodied, the mouthfeel is fresh and lively with subtle effervescence. Light flavours of white stonefruits and florals show with a degree of succulence and sweetness, balanced by fresh, soft, lacy acidity. The mouthfeel is poised and has vitality and unveils nutty, yeasty lees nuances. The wine flows along a fine phenolic line leading to a soft, clean, dry finish. This is an elegantly presented, subtly detailed sparkling wine with stonefruit and floral flavours and a refined texture. Serve as an aperitif over the next 2 years. Hand-picked fruit, WBP, 59% Pinot Gris from 2012, 27% Pinot Gris from 2013, 6% Chardonnay from 2012 and 8% reserve wine from the original cuvee. Approx. 20% barrel-fermented, the wine aged on lees for 12 months. Made by the Charmat process, the wine at 12.5% alc., carrying 9 g/L rs. Lot L14143. This is the third bottling, released in December 2014. 17.0/20 Aug 2015 RRP $19.99 94.5% Pinot Gris and 5.5% Chardonnay from estate fruit in Taradale, 84% from the 2011 vintage, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented with aging on lees. 16% of the blend from 2010, barrel-fermented and aged on lees with batonnage for 15 months. Made by the Charmat process, the wine 12.5% alc., carrying 10 g/L rs. Bright, very pale straw-yellow, pale on rim, with fine bubble and moderate persistence. This has a soft, finely presented, elegantly full nose of stonefruits harmoniously interwoven with subtle nutty, bread-like, toasty elements, the aromatics with freshness, purity and finesse. Dry to taste, the mousse is restrained, allowing the soft stonefruit flavours open and gently fill the palate. Attractive nutty lees and bready notes also build, along with a sweetness and richness that blossoms. The acidity and textures are very fine, and provide excellent line through the palate, leading to a long, delicately sweet, nutty finish. This is a harmonious and evenly presented sparkling with delicate nutty-bready flavours and a subtle richness. Serve as an aperitif or as an anytime wine over the next 2-3 years. It shows extremely astute winemaking to carry the flavours of methode traditionnelle wines. The original cuvee, released September 2011. 18.0+/20 Feb 2012 RRP $24.50
