Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2015

Blended Red from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Mar-2017
Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the edge. This has a soft and gentle nose with harmoniously melded aromas of ripe, dark-red plum fruit with a fine core of black-berried fruits with suggestions of dark herbs and liquorice. Savoury earth and cedary oak emerge with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has restrained flavours of savoury dark-red plums and berry fruits along with spice elements and cedary oak. The palate balances fruit richness with fine, grainy tannin structure and grip, the acidity well-integrated and balanced. The wine has a solid presence and carries positively to a lingering finish of savoury dark plums, earth and cedar. This is a moderately fulsome, savoury red fruited Merlot/Malbec blend with herb, earth and cedary oak layers on a grainy, textured palate with good presence. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 5+ years. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 12 days on skins post ferment and aged 13 months in 27% new oak, 70% French and 30% American. 17.5/20 Mar 2017 RRP $24.95
