Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2014

Blended Red from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-May-2016
Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. This has a firm and intense, but rounded nose with concentrated aromas of ripe, earthy, dark red plum fruit interwoven with spicy red berry fruits, unfolding layers of cedary and spicy, nutty oak, with a little toast, revealing nuances of minty herbs and curranty detail. Medium-full bodied,, soft, plush and juicy flavours of spicy dark plum fruit and earthy red berry fruit are melded harmoniously with waves of cedary spices, nutty oak and toast. The mouthfeel is round and rich, the succulence supported by supple tannins providing mellow grip and accessibility. The structure carries the sweet fruit to an open and easy finish of spices, dark plums, liquorice and cedar. This is a juicy, plush, accessible Merlot/Malbec blend with spicy plum and cedar flavours. Match with grilled and roasted red meats and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4-5 years. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in two-thirds French and one-third American oak barrels. 17.5+/20 May 2016 RRP $24.95
