Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 16-Sep-2013
Even ruby-red colour with light purple hues in rim. The nose is elegant in proportion with good volume and concentration of aromatic dark raspberry fruits lifted with confectionary, jam and herb notes. Medium-light bodied, a good core of raspberry, plum, boysenberry and peppery berry fruits are intermixed with raspberry jam and confectionary flavours. The mouthfeel is soft and rounded, with restrained acidity, enhancing the fruit richness. Dry textures balance the flavours, providing a harmonious flow that leads to a soft, lingering, textural finish with spicy plum and jam nuances. This is a soft-textured, dry Merlot and Malbec blend with raspberry and jammy flavours. Serve with pasta, pizza, barbecued food and Mediterranean fare ocer the next 4+ years. A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, given a 2 day cold soak and fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine spending 7 days on skins and aged 8 months in three-quarters French and one-quarter American oak casks. 17.0/20 Sep 2013 RRP $24.95
