Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 09-Aug-2011
79% Merlot with 21% Malbec, from the Gimblett Gravels, 63% from the ‘Mere Road' and 37% from the ‘Plateau' sites, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 66% French and 34% American oak barrels. Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with light purple hues on edge. The nose is intense and concentrated with aromas of spicy black berry and plum fruits with notes of black pepper and liquorice. Oaking is balanced and subtle, and the aromatics are stylish rather than rampant. A full-bodied wine, this features concentrated flavours of ripe black fruits with attractive spice, pepper and chocolatey layers, framed in a supple, rounded and harmonious structure. While luscious and ripe, the wine retains freshness and balance, and finishes with good length. Match with barbecued, grilled or roasted red meat dishes over the next 4-5+ years. 18.5/20 Aug 2011 RRP $24.95
