Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 15-Aug-2014
Even, moderately deep ruby-red colour, lighter on rim. The bouquet is light and harmonious with gentle aromas of redcurrant and soft red plum fruit infused with some herbal notes. Layers of milk chocolate and cedary oak emerge providing some richness, lift and volume. Medium-bodied and slender in proportion, light flavours of spiced redcurrants, plums, herbs and oak cedar are harmoniously melded on the palate. The wine is modestly extracted, with the tannins lending a dry texture to the mouthfeel. Piquant acidity enlivens the wine and enhances the spicy detail, leading to a lingering finish. This is a smaller-scale Merlot with spicy oak infused red fruit flavours and a lively, dry palate. Serve with pasta, pizza and barbecued food over the next 3 years. Merlot from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyard, given a cold soak and fermented with a portion of whole berries to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 57% French and 43% American oak. 16.5+/20 Aug 2014 RRP $25.00
