Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc from the ‘Mere Road site given a cold soak and fermented with some whole berries to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 73% French and 27% American oak. Full, deep, dark ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is tightly bound with intensely concentrated aromas of black berry fruits and black plums, along with an integrated dark herb underlay, revealing iron-earth a cedary oak notes in the glass. Medium-full bodied, concentrated and intense flavours of dark red berry fruit and black plums are laced with considerable oak spices and cedar. Firm, grainy tannins support the fruit, with good body and drive. Fresh acidity in present and enlivens the palate line, carrying the flavours of sweet, aromatic fruit and oak to a long, lingering finish with herb, pepper and dark floral nuances. This is a tight and firmly constructed, fresh Merlot with good oaking that will soften over the next 5-6+ years Match with herb-marinated roasted and grilled red meat dishes. 18.0/20 Feb 2013 RRP $24.95
