Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Cabernet/Merlot 2012

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 11-Sep-2014
67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 83% French and 17% American oak, with 24% of the barrels new. Moderately deep, dark ruby-red colour, paler on rim. This has a gentle bouquet of savoury blackcurrants and sour plums softly melded with aromas of dried herbs, iron-earth and game with some mint leaf and dusty oak. The aromas are tending secondary. Medium-bodied, light fruit flavours of savoury redcurrants and plums are harmoniously entwined with herbs and earthy elements. The extraction is modest and the tannins supple, with some acid liveliness adding to the drive. The wine flows easily to a light, grainy, lacy finish with lingering toasty oak nuances. This is a harmonious, smooth, medium-bodied Cabernet and Merlot blend with savoury red fruit flavours. Match with lamb and beef and with Mediterranean fare over the next 3 years. 16.5+/20 Sep 2014 RRP $25.00
