Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Cabernet/Merlot 2009

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 14-Mar-2011
A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot from the ‘Mere Road, ‘Plateau' and ‘Trust' vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 14.0% alc., and aged 15 months in oak, 60% French and 40% American. Very dark, deep, purple hued ruby-red, very youthful in appearance. This has a classically elegant, but intense nose of ripe blackcurrants and spicy dark plums with game and earth elements, lifted by spicy oak. On palate a plump, rounded and somewhat chunky wine, with densely packed flavours of dark berries and plums, with complex game meat and earthy characters from brettanomyces. This will intensify with bottle age. The tannins are fine and firm at present, but will become drier. Drink with grilled red meat dishes over the next 3-4 years. 17.0/20 Mar 2011 RRP $24.95
