Mills Reef Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Dec-2013
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 8 months in seasoned oak. Moderately deep, dark ruby-red colour with black hues. The nose is soft with well-packed aromas of dark plum and berry fruit, blossoming to reveal notes of dried herbs, earth, along with game, cedar and spicy oak interest. Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, sweet, lush and juicy flavours of dark plums, dried herbs and savoury earth are the feature on the palate. The mouthfeel is up-front, full and rounded with a core of soft, grainy tannin extraction, the acidity in the background. The wine is carried through to a sweet, cedary and earthy nuanced finish. This is a soft-textured, flavoursome, sweet-fruited Merlot-based wine with cedary notes. Serve with Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4 years. 16.5+/20 Dec 2013 RRP $18.95
