Mills Reef ‘Estate’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Aug-2015
Full, very dark, black-red colour with ruby and purple hues. This has a firmly concentrated nose with deep aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with black pepper, black plums, liquorice and spices. Black mineral, earth and violet floral elements unfold in the glass, adding detail and interest. Medium-bodied, the palate is up-front with plush, rich and juicy flavours of black berried and plummy fruits. This is fruit driven, with a smooth and rounded mouthfeel and supple tannin extraction supporting the fruit sweetness. The wine flows easily along a very fine-grained line leading to a soft, attractively lifted and nuanced finish of florals and Asian spices. This is a soft, plush and up-front, juicy Syrah with supple tannins and spicy nuances. Match with barbecued grilled and roasted red meat dishes over the next 3 years. Syrah fruit from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, given a cold soak and fermented in open and closed vats, and barrel to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 50% each French and American oak barrels. 17.0/20 Aug 2015 RRP $18.00
