Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ ‘Trust Vineyard’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 06-May-2011
100% Syrah from the ‘Trust' vineyard given a cold soak and wild yeast fermented to 13.0% alc. in ‘Integrale' barrels, one-third French and two-thirds American oak, of which 18% was new. The wine was matured in oak a total of 15 months. The Mills Reef team have found the ‘Integrale' barrels particularly suited to Syrah. Dark, deep, ruby-red with youthful purple hues to the colour, this has a soft, full and rich bouquet of savoury black berry fruits with spicy black pepper, game and complex animal nuances. Well-ripened, softly supple and juicy on palate, the flavours are surprising and pleasing with their restraint. Cracked pepper, spices as well as floral notes show, and there is good depth, concentration and sufficient extract to enable cellaring for 5-7 years. Match with duck, pork and most red meat dishes. 18.5-/20 May 2011 RRP $45.00
