Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 11-Sep-2014
Brilliant straw-yellow colour with pale gold-green hues, light on edge. The nose is elegant, tightly bound and finely expressed with an intense core of ripe, savoury citrus and yellow stonefruit aromas with subtly infused nutty oak, unfolding complexing nuances of cream, nuts and toast. Medium-full bodied, the palate is tightly concentrated, the fruit a little restrained but showing integrated and harmoniously entwined flavours of yellow stonefruits, ripe citrus fruits and nuts. The mouthfeel is creamy from the barrel-ferment, and guided by a very fine textural thread and fresh, lacy acidity. Lovely mealy notes and toasty detail carry through to a very long and sustained finish. This is an elegant and stylish Chardonnay with complex stonefruit and toasty detail. Match with roasted poultry and pork, and with rabbit or veal over over the next 5+ years. Hand-picked fruit, 76% from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyard, Gimblett Gravels and 24% from Te Awanga, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.2% alc., with 25% undergoing MLF, the wine then aged for 10 months in 41% new French oak, with batonnage. 18.5/20 Sep 2014 RRP $39.00
