Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 29-May-2011
Very dark, deep, well-saturated purple-hued, ruby-red in colour, this has an excellent, intense, tight and lifted nose of black fruits and florals, cracked pepper, along with aniseed and exotic Asian spices. Showing real concentration and depth on the palate, this is packed with black fruit flavours along with earthy spices and pepper, along with warm nutty notes, that lead to savoury interest. The wine is finely textured and carries good acidity, resulting in a lively mouthfeel. While surprisingly accessible now, this will develop more complex characters over the next 6-8+ years. Serve with rich, roasted game meat. Fruit from the ‘Mere Road' vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, indigenous yeast fermented in 96% new ‘Integrale' barrels to 14.0% alc., the wine then aged 16 months in oak. 18.5+/20 May 2011 RRP $45.00
