Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Nov-2012
Very dark, deep, ruby-red with purple hues, lighter on rim. The nose is very finely presented, intense and tight, quite elegant in proportion, with aromas of ripe black berries and black plums, along with nuances of iron-earth, minerals and tobacco, lifted with oak shine. Fullish bodied, tight and restrained flavours of spicy, ripe black plums and berries are complexed by lifted oak and earthy elements. The mouthfeel is bright and vibrant, with fresh acidity enhancing the tension and energy. Very fine-grained tannins underscore the fruit, providing structure and refined textures, and the mouthfeel is one of balance and harmony. A moderately long finish completes the wine, with nuances of ripe plums, spices and tobacco. This is an elegant, refined and vibrant Merlot that will unfold to show greater richness and complex layers over the next 7-9+ years. 100% Merlot from the ‘Mere Road' vineyard, hand-picked, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged for 15 months in 47% new French oak. 18.5+/20 Nov 2012 RRP $45.00
