Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Cabernet/Merlot 2013

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Aug-2015
A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot and 6.5% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyard, destemmed and fermented with whole berries to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 16 days post-ferment maceration and aged 16 months in 40% new oak, 78% French and 22% American. Full, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is very finely concentrated with tightly packed, intense aromas of ripe blackcurrants and cassis with nuances of mint and aromatic leafiness and piquant herbs. Subtle layers of iron-earth emerge in the glass, the nose retaining elegance of proportion. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a concentrated core of ripe blackcurrants, cassis and black plums entwined with subtle nuances of leaf, herbs and iron-earth. The oaking is integrated and adds a suggestion of spice and shine. The mouthfeel is vibrant, fresh and exudes vitality and liveliness with sweet fruit alongside bright acidity. Very fine-grained tannins support the fruit adding to the fruit core and line, carrying the wine to an elegant, long and sustained finish. This is an elegant, finely concentrated, vibrant Cabernet/Merlot with sweet cassis fruit, hints of herbs and a very refined tannin structure. Match with herb-marinated lamb and beef dishes over the next 6-9 years. 18.5+/20 Aug 2015 RRP $49.95
