Maude Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 12-Jul-2012
Deep ruby-red colour with a hint of garnet to the hue. The nose is softly full and voluminous with intensity and depth, well-packed with aromas of dark red berry fruits interwoven with autumnal hints of undergrowth, earth and dried herbs. Medium-full bodied, this has a robustness and strength of palate core, with rich and concentrated flavours of dark red fruits integrated with savoury dark herb notes. There is a sweetness to the fruit, with fine, lacy acidity underlining the expression, and the tannins are supple and rounded, filling the mouth with excellent presence. Oaking is very well-balanced and adds subtle spiciness, and the wine finishes with moderately sustained complex flavours. This fulsome, solid Pinot Noir is now developing secondary characters which are well-integrated with the fruit. It will be a good match hearty Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare over the next 5-6 years. 31% Gibbston Valley, 31% Queensbury, 26% Bannockburn, and 12% Wanaka fruit, indigenous yeast fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.9% alc, the wine aged 12 months in French barriques. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $30.00 31% Gibbston Valley, 31% Queensbury, 26% Bannockburn, and 12% Wanaka fruit, indigenous yeast fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.9% alc, the wine aged 12 months in French barriques. Bright, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, this has a fresh, crisp, intense and linear bouquet of bright dark-red berry fruits, a little tight and restrained at present. There is a fine steely, mineral aspect to the aromatics and good oak balance. Medium full-bodied, this shows luscious and juicy raspberry-like fruit and dark cherry and plum notes with oak spice flavours. Dried herb and savoury interest underlines the fruit. The palate has fresh, crisp acidity and fine tannin density providing good depth and mouthfeel. The wine has drive and line, with a sweet fruited, sustained finish. A bright fruited wine with underlying interest to match Asian duck and pork dishes over the next 5-6+ years. 18.0+/20 Jul 2011 RRP $30.00
