Matua Valley ‘Single Vineyard’ Matheson Hawke’s Bay Malbec 2009

Malbec from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 09-Sep-2011
Malbec fruit from vines over 15 y.o. from the ‘Matheson' vineyard, destemmed and given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in mainly new French oak for 14 months, then blended with a small percentage of ‘Matheson' Merlot. Very full, black-red colour with garnet hues on edge, this has a bouquet of lush, ripe, exotic black fruit laced with a little toasty oak char, the aromatics quite reined-in and with a gentleness of expression. Full-bodied, this is an elegantly proportioned wine with concentrated and succulent flavours of dark plum and boysenberries with notes of jam, Asian spices and violetty florals, lifted with sweet oak vanilla elements. Fine-grained tannins provide a supple mouthfeel and proper drive through the length of the palate, and good acidity is present, adding to the juiciness. A surprisingly elegant, but lush red to serve with red game meat over the next 7-9+ years. 18.5+/20 Sep 2011 RRP $69.99
