Matua ‘Single Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 25-Oct-2015
A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Malbec from the ‘Matheson’ vineyard, hand-picked and fermented with a high proportion of whole berries in French oak cuves to 13.6% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 58% new French oak with a small percentage of American oak. Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. This has an elegant and finely presented, tightly bound nose of ripe black berried fruit in a concentrated amalgam of exotic spices and nutty oak seamlessly interwoven with dark herbal nuances. Medium-full bodied and well-proportioned, the flavours of ripe blackberry fruit and spiced plums show with sweetness and form a tight core. Exotic spices and nutty oak notes unfold to provide complexing interest. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained, powdery tannins providing good structure and grip, with integrated acidity lending brightness and energy. The wine flows to a long, elegant finish with detailed layers of spices and nutty oak. This is an elegantly concentrated black-fruited Merlot/Malbec blend with exotic spice and nutty notes and a fine-grained structure. Serve with grilled and roasted lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 8-10+ years. 256 cases made. 18.5+/20 Oct 2015 RRP $57.99
