Matawhero Irwin Chardonnay 2017, Gisborne

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Gisborne
Review Date : 07-Jun-2023
Bright, yellow-gold, even colour throughout. The nose is full and focused, with aromas of struck-match, stonefruit, melon, dried apple, flinty minerals, marzipan and creamy elements. Full-bodied, aromas of stonefruit and dried apricot, interweaved with melon, and flinty minerals, enriched by fine spice, roasted almonds, marzipan and creamy custard. The wine is integrated harmoniously with rich flavour and spice. The mouthfeel is refined with a chalky texture and weight, flows with fine spice to a long, well-rounded finish, long finish. This Chardonnay is matured with complex, integrated flavours, and a refined chalky texture draws linearity. Match with pancetta-wrapped scallops and baked fish over the next 5 years. Fruit from Tietjen vineyard, 100% clone Mendoza, Pied du Cuve natural yeasts fermented in a mixture of American and Hungarian oak barriques, 30% new oak, underwent full MLF. 14.1% alc. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) Jun 2023 RRP $60
