Matariki ‘Quintology’ Hawke’s Bay 2007

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 04-Oct-2011
Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, this has an intense and concentrated nose with an elegance of proportion. Ripe blackberry fruits with complex earth and iron nuance are tightly bound, promising more to develop and unfold. Full-bodied, the palate has tightly bound and concentrated flavours of black berry fruits, ripe dark plums, pepper and liquorice. Mineral, earth and iron nuances add real interest and oaking is balanced. The flavours are supported by ample extraction, the tannins rounding and becoming supple, allowing fruit sweetness to show and carry through to a long finish. A blend of 38% Merlot, 23% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc and 8% Malbec, fermented to 14.0% alc. the wine aged over 20 months in 30% new French oak. This is an archetype Gimblett Gravels red with a core of black fruits and significant structure, now beginning to show fruit sweetness and softening tannins. Match with roasted lamb, beef and venison, and hard cheeses over the next 8-10+ years. 18.5+/20 Oct 2011 RRP $80.00
