Matariki ‘Quintology’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 12-Jul-2014
Hand-picked fruit, 43% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 8% Syrah and 4% Cabernet Franc, from Gimblett Road, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in French oak barriques. Very full, dark, black-hued ruby-red colour with a touch of garnet on rim. This has an elegant and harmoniously integrated, seamless bouquet of ripe, bright and aromatic black berry fruits with layers of plum and curranty detail, lifted with suggestions of dark red floral fragrances and sweet oak nuances. Medium-full to full-bodied, and elegantly proportioned on palate, a harmonious amalgam of fruits, with dark berries and plums flows with very fine, ripe lacy acidity providing poise and tension. The fruit is underlined be very refined tannin extraction which allows the fruit sweetness to feature. Iron-earth, mineral, liquorice and sweet toasty oak nuances emerge and carry through to a very long and sustained, succulent finish. This is a beautifully rich, refined and complex detailed Bordeaux-blend with seamless vitality. Match with roast lamb, beef and venison, or hard cheeses over the next 10+ years. 19.0/20 Jul 2014 RRP $80.00
