Matariki ‘Les Filles’ Gimblett Gravels’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 12-Jul-2014
Hand-picked fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged over 2 years in predominantly French oak barrels. Very dark, deep ruby-red colour with some black hues, lighter on edge. This has a full and broad bouquet with excellent depth and presence, showing ripe, savoury dark red berry and spicy, earthy, peppery aromas, all harmoniously interwoven, and lifted with a touch of volatility. Full-bodied, sweet and luscious fruit flavours of dark red berry fruits brown spices, pepper and game are seamlessly melded with oak cedar. The fruit is underlined by very fine-grained powdery tannins and subtle acidity driving the palate, unfolding layers of complex earth, undergrowth and spices. The wine has a lingering, textured, sweet and spicy finish. This is a fulsome, mouthfilling sweet-fruited, savoury and spicy, complex Syrah with structure and the energy to keep well for another 7-8+ years. Serve with Middle Eastern fare and game meat. 18.5+/20 Jul 2014 RRP $58.00
