Matahiwi Estate HOLLY South Series Pinot Noir 2020, Wairarapa

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 16-Dec-2021
Deep, ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly full, with power and depth, aromas of strawberries, red cherries interweave hibiscus, dark herbs and unfolding black pepper and cinnamon. Medium-full bodied, concentration shows on the palate, displaying aromas of dark cherries, ripe strawberries, plums melded with cinnamon, cardamon and cocoa, hibiscus unfold, and a hint of thyme and earth. The mouthfeel is silky with supple tannins, adorned by milk chocolate creaminess and a touch of cocoa. The fruit has density and ripeness, lacy acidity keeping the wine balanced, and spice driving a lengthy finish. This is an elegant and complex Pinot Noir with concentration and length on a velvety palate. Match with lamb racks and smoked duck over the next 5-8 years. Fruit from Matahiwi vineyard in Masterton, eight clones harvested and fermented separately in open-top tanks with some batches destemmed and the Abel clone whole cluster and fermented to 13%, on skins for an average of 21 days, aged in French oak barriques for 12 months, 20% new oak. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) Dec 2021 RRP $46.99
