Man O’ War ‘Valhalla’ Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 09-Sep-2014
Hand-picked fruit from sites on two terroirs, mid-slope with clay soils, and cooler, elevated volcanic-influenced soil vineyards. Foot-stomped or WBP and indigenous yeast fermented in 500 L acacia and oak puncheons to 14.9% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new oak on lees, then given a further 6 months on lees in tank. Full, bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour. The nose is firmly concentrated and packed with layers of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits entwined with complexing aromas of smoky, toasty oak, nuts and flinty reduction that unfold in waves of interest. Full-bodied, softly concentrated and deep flavours of stonefruits, citrus fruits, nuts, minerals and flinty reduction form a powerful palate core. The mouthfeel is rounded and the weight and density features. The wine flows smoothly and with positive drive, with underlying acid vibrancy that carries the wine to a dry, concentrated, detailed, flinty finish. This is a complex and concentrated Chardonnay with layers of citrussy fruit, toasty oak and flintiness. Serve with poultry, pork, veal and hare over the next 5+ years. 19.0/20 Sep 2014 RRP $42.00
