Man O’ War ‘Valhalla’ Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 17-Feb-2015
Deepish light golden yellow colour, lighter on rim. The bouquet is full and broad with a complex, secondary amalgam of deeply concentrated flavours of savoury citrus and yellow stonefruits melded with smoke, nuts and toasty oak. The aromatics possess a minerally, steely core that provides a freshness to balance the development. Medium-full bodied, bold and up-front flavours of ripe citrus fruits, oak and toast fill the palate. The flavours are enriched by creamy, and nutty secondary complexities, and the mouthfeel has a lacy acid line that provides cut and liveliness to the breadth and layers of interest. The wine carries to a concentrated and long lingering finish of cream, toast and citrus flavours. This is a full, bold and complex Chardonnay with secondary toasty, oaky development and underlying acid cut. Match with barbecued seafood and roast pork over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Lone Kauri’, ‘Nikau’, ‘Little Beast’, ‘Noises’ and ‘Crossings’ sites, 70% tank fermented and 30% fermented in seasoned oak, by indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in oak on lees with no MLF. 18.0+/20 Feb 2015 RRP $42.00
