Man O’ War ‘Exiled’ Ponui Island Pinot Gris 2014

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 17-Feb-2015
Fruit from Ponui Island, a portion late-picked with some botrytis, given skin contact and fermented, aa raisined component in barrel to 12.5% alc. and 51.8 g/L RS, the wine aged 18% in seasoned French oak and bottled to retain CO2. Even, light golden colour with straw hues and some blush. The nose is softly full and gentle in expression with aromas of pears and yellow stonefuits, along with nuances of exotic florals and a suggestion of musk along with nuances of nuts. Medium-sweet to taste and light-medium bodied, the flavours of pears, yellow stonefruits and florals show with a delicate succulence and richness. The flavours are subtle, detailed and intricately interwoven. The fruit sweetness is enhanced and balanced by the discreet acidity which lends vitality and poise and the mouthfeel is rounded and smooth flowing, following a very fine thread of texture leading to a very long, lingering finish with lusciousness and freshness. This is a subtle and detailed medium-sweet Pinot Gris with honied interest and detail that grow in interest over the next 4-5 years. Serve with mildly spicy Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, or semi-hard cheeses. 18.5/20 Feb 2015 RRP $32.99
