Man O’ War ‘Exiled’ Ponui Island Pinot Gris 2013

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 10-Apr-2014
Fruit from Ponui Island, GM clone tank fermented clean, the St Helena clone fermented with solids by indigenous yeasts, to 14.5% alc. and 27 g/L RS. Bright straw-yellow colour with a faint blush, paler on rim. The nose is fresh with aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and suggestions of red fruits, along with subtle layers of savoury spices and earth, and wild ferment smokiness, the bouquet showing good intensity. Medium in sweetness and medium-full bodied, the palate is softly textured with restrained flavours of yellow stonefruits, subtly laced with red fruit notes, along with honey and spices. The fruit possesses lusciousness, the richness balanced by fine, drying phenolics, providing a poised mouthfeel. Some alcohol power and warmth drives the flavours and textures to a long and sustained finish. This is a fulsome, medium Pinot Gris with some underlying power and sweet fruit balanced by fine textures. Serve with Chinese and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4-5 years. 18.5-/20 Apr 2014 RRP $32.99
