Man O’ War ‘Dreadnought’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 10-Apr-2014
Full, very dark, black-hued ruby-red with some garnet hues on edge. This has a full and densely packed nose of softly entwined aromas of ripe black berried fruits, black pepper, spices, dusty earth and toasty oak with fragrant dark red florals. Medium-full bodied, plush waves of sweetly ripe black fruit flavours softly fill the palate. Layers of spices, black pepper, Asian spices and sweet oak with bacon and toasty suggestions blossom with attractive smoothness and harmony. The mouthfeel is fulsome, open and very accessible, with rounded, fine-textured tannins and good structure in support. An underlying dense core carries the palate to a broad, open, succulently rich and lush finish. This is a full, rich and broad Syrah with a deep core and layers of black fruits with opulence. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 6-8 years. Syrah fruit from the steepest sites, destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.6% alc., the wine aged one year in 30% new French oak. 18.5+/20 Apr 2014 RRP $55.00
