Mahurangi River ‘Mostly Merlot’ Matakana Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 05-Dec-2012
Estate fruit, 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 24 days on skins, and aged 12 months in 5% new French oak barriques. Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with a slightly lighter rim. This has a full, broad nose of ripe, black fruits infused with cedary spices. The aromas are densely packed and show funky, savoury, meat and earth notes. Full-bodied, sweetly ripe and succulent fruit flavours of blackberries are intermixed with dark herb and earthy blackcurrant notes. Some savoury, meaty elements and spicy oak add interest. The mouthfeel is fulsome and rounded with fine, dry and grainy tannins that build in prominence, carrying the fruit to a long, dry and textured finish of cedar and earth. This is a sweet and lush-fruited Merlot-based that has a complex, savoury earthiness and dry, grainy tannins. Match with casseroles and slow cooked red meat dishes over the next 5-7 years. 325 cases made. 17.5-/20 Dec 2012 RRP $39.00
