Mahurangi River Matakana Syrah 2010

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 05-Dec-2012
Estate Syrah fruit indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 19 days on skins and 5 months in 50% new French oak. Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and powerful with very ripe fruit aromas of blackberries and boysenberry jam, revealing notes of black pepper, liquorice and iron-earth elements. The oaking adds a sweet and spicy hint and is in good balance. Full-bodied, the palate features rich, ripe and lusciously sweet flavours of blackberry jam with boysenberry interest. The flavours are plush and the mouthfeel soft, with discreet tannin grip underling the palate, and low acidity adding to the accessibility and roundness. Some alcohol warmth emerges on the finish, and carries through on the long, solid and richly sweet finish. This is a warm and ripe Syrah with richness and soft mouthfeel. Very accessible now, serve with barbecued food, casseroles and slow cooked game meat over the next 4-5 years. 45 cases made. 17.0+/20 Dec 2012 RRP $45.00
