Mahi Alchemy Chardonnay 2019, Marlborough

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 28-May-2021
Bright, medium yellow with depth, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant yet powerful, nuances of bonfire smoke, flinty mineral has a focused direction, enriched by butter and toasted nuts with a citrusy, green stonefruit core. Medium-full bodied, green plums, citrus, preserved lemon interweave honey-roasted cashews, flinty mineral and struck match smokiness; a lifted spice veil layer added interest. Grapefruit peel scent lingers to linearity. The palate is smooth-flowing and buoyant with a subtle buttery character along a crunchy mineral line packed with chalky phenolic, enticing and elegant. This is an impressive, characterful Chardonnay with barrel-fermented details and a smooth-flowing mineral drive. Match with smoked quail and celeriac puree over the next 8+ years. Fruit was sourced from Badlands Vineyard, Rapaura. Handpicked, whole bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast in French oak barrels to 13.5% alc, 1.6 g/l RS. Left on yeast less for 15 months. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) May 2021 RRP $39.90
