Konrad Marlborough Gruner Veltliner 2010

Gruner Veltliner from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 02-Mar-2011
This is the first release of Gruner Veltliner from Konrad. Made from two clones from the ‘Landfall' and ‘Wall' vineyards in the Waihopi Valley, the fruit hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, then fermented with native yeasts, the pressings in old French barrels with high solids to 14.0% alc. and 4.0 g/L rs. There was no MLF. Very pale straw in colour, this has an elegant and well-proportioned bouquet of peppery, herby fruit, identifiably varietal. Dry on palate with weight and some texture, the fruit expression is light, with pepper and herb characters. A smokiness and nutty warmth, possibly from the wild yeast and solids, adds some interest, but hides the fruit a little. A good initial release. Drink over the next 2 years.. 16.5-/20 Dec 2010 RRP $25.95
