Kingsmill ‘Tippet’s Dam’ Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 05-Mar-2012
Dark, deep ruby-red colour with slight hints of purple on edge. The bouquet is intensely firm and tight, showing some reduction, but also plenty of dark berry fruits with Asian spices, herbs, oak and florals in the subtle support. Medium-full bodied, concentrated, ripe black fruits are expressed with good richness and concentration. Spicy oak, herbs and violetty florals unfold in layers. The tannins are beginning to soften and the mouthfeel is rounded, though bacidity is balanced and adds to the line and long finish. This rich, juicy and concentrated Pinot Noir is beginning to soften. Serve with roasted duck and pork over the next 4-5+ years. Clones 10/5, 5, 777, 115, 113 and 13 from the ‘Tippet's Dam' site in Bannockburn, destemmed and given a cold soak, then fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 14 days on skins. The wine was aged 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Wine made by Matt Connell. 18.0-/20 Mar 2012 RRP $39.95 Fruit from the ‘Tippet's Dam' vineyard, clones 10/5. 5, 777, 115, 113 and 13, fully destemmed and given a cold soak, then fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Medium-deep ruby-red colour with a pale, purple edge, thisis youthful in appearance. The nose is tight and firm with densely packed aromas of black cherries and dark berry fruits along with spices, dried herbs and toasty oak. This has concentrated dark berry and black plum flavours on the palate, the oak char showing a little. The textures are soft and rounded, the tannins providing good backbone. Soft acidity allows accessibility now, but the depth of the wine will enable it being kept another 5-6+ years. Serve with grilled red meats, and spicy Middle Eastern cuisine. 17.5+/20 May 2011 RRP $39.95
