Dark, deep, purple hued ruby-red in colour, this is very youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full with powerful bacon-like American oak dominating the ripe, black-pepper fruit. Rich liquorice and spice aromas intermingle with dark milk chocolate notes. With 13.0% alc., this is very full-flavoured on palate, the fruit in the ripe black pepper and blackberry spectrum, with savoury, earthy root liquorice and inky overtones. Plenty of toasty oak and chocolate notes fill the mouth. The acidity is low, and combined with the soft tannin extraction, leaves the wine somewhat blowsy and lacking tension. Nevertheless, a statement of richness. The first Syrah from Kevern Walker, the fruit from the Gimblett Gravels with 10% ‘Brooke' in the blend. The wine was aged 12 months in 1 and 2 y.o. American and French oak barrels, with 5% new American oak. Drink with grilled game meat over the next 3-5 years. 15.5/20 Mar 2011 RRP $16.00
