Karikari Estate Calypso Merlot 2017, Northland

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 08-Mar-2022
Deep, ruby-red with a garnet hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is mellow, gently full, softly developed aromas of dried plums, red berries, entwined with an amalgam of spice, herb and a hint of cedar. Medium-full bodied, aromas of dried plums and red berries accompanied by savoury development, spice, cedar and a meatiness. The firm tannin structure has been mellowed and softened, leaving a powdery grip. Integrated acidity carry flavours to a savoury, sustained finish. This succulent, plum-fruited Merlot shows age development of cedar, spice and meatiness on a softened, firm tannin mouthfeel. Match with meatballs and beef dishes over the next 2-3 years. Handpicked, fermented in two separate batches, fermented to 13.3% alc, total skin contact time 3 weeks, 30% barrelled for 45 weeks, 60% barrelled for 20 weeks, approx 50% each of American and French oak. 17.5+/20 pts (89 pts) Mar 2022 RRP $27
