Johner Estate Wairarapa Cabernet/Merlot/Malbec 2013

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 16-Apr-2015
25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec, fermented to 13.6% alc., the wine on skins for 3 weeks and aged 12 months in 30% new French oak. Very dark, deep, ruby-red colour with black-purple hues. This is very firmly concentrated on the nose with aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with earthy plum and nutty, spicy oak detail, unfolding a thread of cool, fresh currant and leafy nuances. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant and finely concentrated with flavours of ripe dark red berry fruits intermixed with blackcurrant notes. The fruit is tightly bound and restrained in expression at present. This has good weight and presence, and the mouthfeel balances fine-grained tannin extraction and lacy acidity, enlivening the fruit sweetness and carrying the wine to a long and sustained finish. This is an elegant and stylish Cabernet and Merlot-based blend with fine structure and freshness. Serve with roast lamb, beef and venison over the next 5-6+ years. 17.5/20 Apr 2015 RRP $40.00
