Johner Estate Gladstone Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 16-Apr-2015
Full, dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour. This has a full, open and broad nose with aromas of black berried fruit entwined with a fine herbal line, revealing fresh, piquant peppery elements and liquorice with aeration. Savoury spices and nutty oak notes add detail. Medium-full bodied and elegantly proportioned, the fruit expression is restrained and tightly bound. Flavours of black berried fruits, herbs and liquorice show with seasoned oak nutty and slightly resinous notes. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction lending a firm line, and the palate flows with plenty of acidity and energy enlivening the mouthfeel. The wine has concentration and good length of black fruits, herbs and spices on the finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, lively Syrah with tightly bound black fruit and herb flavours. Match with slow-cooked red meat dishes and semi-hard cheeses over the next 5+ years. Fruit from the ‘Johner’ vineyard, fermented to 13.4% alc., the wine spending 2 weeks on skins and aged 12 months in 25% new French oak. 17.5-/20 Apr 2015 RRP $50.00
