Made from 24 y.o. vines in the stoniest soils of the Wairau River Valley from the Forrest vineyards, fermented to 13.0% alc. and 2.5 g/L rs, partially in seasoned barriques with lees stirring. Very pale coloured and very youthful in appearance, this has a very fresh, tight nose of English gooseberries and minerals. The palate is beautifully balanced with gooseberry and minerally fruit flavours on a seamlessly smooth-textured base and slippery, bright acidity. While restrained in expression, this has refinement. Made in a Sancerre style, this will continue to evolve another 3-4+ years. 100 dozen made.  Aug 2011 Brilliant, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, this has a very fine and elegant nose of ripe gooseberries and gentle notes of tropical fruits with green beans and minerals that unfold in the glass. Dry on palate, this is still tightly bound and a little raw, yet to integrate and build. The gooseberry and minerally fruit is somewhat locked-in and restrained. However there is good weight, concentration and presence, despite the youthful austerity. This will evolve and become more expressive over the next 3-4+ years. The John Forrest ‘Collection' wines are John's highest aspiration wines, this made from Forrest's oldest vines from the stoniest sites, whole bunch pressed and partially barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., and 2.5 g/L rs.
