Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2002

Syrah from France - Rhone
Review Date : 17-May-2011
100% Syrah from various plots, but based on ‘Bessards', the wine aged 18 months in 10-20% new oak casks. From a lighter vintage, this is deep ruby-red, still youthful in appearance. Elegant and intensely piercing on nose, this has fine, elegant blackcurrant and black berry fruits with pepper, game and brettanomyces. The wine is medium-full bodied, and tightly constructed with extremely fine tannins and excellent proportion. The structure is excellent and acidity provides great tension. However the fruit expression is beginning to be dominated by the farmyard and animal characters of brett. This is a fine wine faulted, but the underlying quality can still be seen. Drink over the next 4-5 years.   May 2011
