J-L Chave Hermitage 2010

Syrah from France - Rhone
Review Date : 03-Jan-2015
Very dark, near saturated black-purple colour, very youthful in appearance. This has a very powerful and intense nose, remarkably elegant in proportion, with a full array of aromatics, still very primary and unformed, with ripe black berried fruits, earth, tar and mineral detail, along with beautiful dark red and violet floral perfumes. Full-bodied and with great power, drive and presence, this retains a sense of elegance, style and freshness, with concentrated, vibrant black berried fruits at the core. Complexing savoury, meat, game, earth and mineral detail emerges with pepper and spice nuances with time in glass. This has a fulsome structure with real extract, the tannins ripe, flowery and fine in graininess. Excellent acidity lends energy and vitality. This is a wine of power, richness, complexity and structure. A magnificent wine with 15-20+ years of development ahead easily. 100% Syrah, from 9.3 ha, mostly ‘Bessards’, the ‘L’Hermite’ and 5 other sites, destemmed and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged up to 26 months in <20% new oak. 19.5+/20 Nov 2014 RRP $380.00
