Howard Park ‘Flint Rock’ Great Southern Shiraz 2010

Syrah from Australia - Western Australia
Review Date : 20-Apr-2015
Dark, deep ruby-red colour with some purple hues. This is an elegant wine on bouquet with savoury black and red berry fruits spiced by black pepper elements. Showing good depth and density, concentrated black berried fruits are entwined with dark red berry fruit and pepper notes. This has a tight core, the fruit richness a little restrained, and the wine carried by the mouthfeel and weight. Tannin extraction is balanced and supple. This is a restrained Shiraz with good palate depth. 6-7+ years ahead, easily. Fruit from ‘Block 8’ of the ‘Lange’ vineyard, Frankland River and ‘Figtree’ vineyard Mount Barker, a portion with fermentation finished to new oak to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in new and seasoned French and American oak. 18.0/20 Apr 2015 RRP $33.95 Fruit from Frankland River and Mount Barker, a portion with fermentation finished to new oak to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in new and seasoned French and American oak. Full black-red colour, near saturated, a little lighter on edge. The nose is gently voluminous with deep aromas of ripe black berry and black plum aromas harmoniously entwined with savoury earthy nuances, oak cedar and pepper, forming a complete amalgam. Fullish bodied, the fruit flavours are a little restrained, showing ripe black berry and plum, complexed by savoury spices, earth and black pepper. Good extraction and structure supports the fruit which opens in sweetness, and the mouthfeel has energy and liveliness. The core of the palate carries the wine through to a tightly bound and long fingering finish of black berries, pepper and spices. This is a lively, rich-fruited Shiraz that grows in sweetness. Serve with casseroles and slow cooked red meats over the next 6-8+ years. 18.5-/20 Apr 2014 RRP $33.00
