Gruss Alsace Grand Cru Riesling ‘Eichberg’ 2011

Riesling from France - Alsace
Review Date : 10-Oct-2014
Bright straw-yellow colour. The bouquet is rich and intense with lime and white stonefruits, and a richness of honeysuckle nuance and toasty secondary development being hinted. Dry and with a firm core, moderated by fruit lusciousness. Softer acidity and with a fine-textured, dry palate. Restrained in its quenchability, and the softness to the core, this has vinous depth and length. 6-8+ years. Fruit from 0.54 ha of the ‘Eichberg’ grand cru site, from vines planted in 1978, hand-picked and WBP, fermented to 14.2% alc. and 5.2 g/L rs, the wine undergoing batonnage. 290 dozen made. 18.5+/20 Oct 2014 RRP $57.99 Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless. This is very tightly bound with refined aromas of fresh lime fruit infused with minerals and white florals, the purity and focus being the feature. Dryish to taste, the fruit is refined in expression, showing white florals and citrus notes, becoming rich and showing sweetness in the glass. This has excellent drive and linearity, with great acid cut. The wine flows with energy and zestiness, with just a little alcoholic power emerging on finish. A fine and focussed Riesling that will evolve over 5-6+ years. From 0.54 ha of the Eichberg grand cru site at Eguisheim, from vines planted 1978. 14.2% alc. with 5.2 g/L RS, the wine undergoing batonnage. 290 dozen made. 18.5/20 Mar 2014 RRP $57.99 Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on edge. The bouquet is very gentle with subtle and ethereal aromas of limes with honeysuckle and mineral detail. This is very pure and delicate, the nose very refined in expression. Dry to taste and with good weight and presence, lively and bright citrus and mineral flavours form a good core with linearity and drive from some alcohol power, balanced by fine, lacy acidity. The poise and detailed delicacy of flavours provide proportion and stylishness, and the palate leads to a tight, fine-textured and dry finish with real length. This is a dry, delicately flavoured Riesling with weight, presence, drive and style.
