Greywacke Marlborough Pinot Gris 2013

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 26-Nov-2015
This is 75% wild yeast barrel fermented to 14.5% alc. and 8 g/L rs. The wild yeast has lent a degree of desirable individuality and funkiness, such that the 2015 will be totally wild yeast fermented. I still see plenty of varietal fruit here. Brilliant straw-yellow, tightly bound aromas of white and yellow stonefruits show with a soft freshness and youthfulness. Subtle complexing flinty and minerally notes intermingle with honeysuckle aromatic richness. Off-dry to taste, this has a soft-textured, dense core with fresh acidity and liveliness surrounding. Lifted stonefruits and pear flavours with spice and honeysuckle show with good lusciousness, leading to a slightly funky minerally finish. This combines richness with complex nuances. 18.5+/20 Sep 2015 RRP $29.95 Selection Ovaille and Mission clone fruit from the ‘Wrekin Terrace’ vineyard in the Brancott Valley with a small portion of Entav 52 clone from the ‘Riverbrook’ vineyard, Rapaura, hand-picked and WBP, fermented in tank with a portion indigenous yeast old barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc. and 10 g/L RS. Following blending, the wine was aged 5 months on lees in seasoned oak. Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is fresh with softly full aromas of piquant, exotic floral perfumes, interwoven with white stonefruits, subtle flint and mineral elements, and nutty suggestions. The complexing detail is expressed with clarity, revealing honeysuckle richness with aeration. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has weight and mouthfeel presence, showing flavours of yellow florals, stonefruits, honey and minerals. This has aromatic lift and bright vitality. The wine has concentration and drive, with fresh, lively acidity lending energy, tension and cut. The wine follows a finely textured line leading to a finely concentrated, elegant and lingering finish. This is a finely proportioned off-dry Pinot Gris with liveliness and subtle weight, and exotic floral, honey and stonefruit flavours. Serve with mildly spicy poultry and pork dishes over the next 4+ years. 18.5/20 Jul 2015 RRP $29.95
