Greystone Waipara Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 01-Apr-2012
Fruit from the ‘Greystone' vineyard fully destemmed and fermented to 14.5% alc., and aged in 25% new French oak. Full, dark, ruby-red colour with depth. The nose is full and forward with ripe, densely packed dark red berry fruit aromas with oak spices and some savoury mushroom elements. Full-bodied, this is plump and near-fleshy with ripe dark berry and plum flavours, now showing complexing secondary game and oak toast notes. This is plush and soft in texture, yet has a good core, fine tannin line and good acidity underlying, which lead to a long, spicy finish. Drink over the next 4-6 years. Tasted with French burgundy wine, this seems richer, riper and far more fleshy. 18.0/20 Mar 2012 RRP $41.00 Fruit fully destemmed and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged in 25% new French oak. Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with excellent depth and heart, the bouquet is tightly constructed with intense dark cherry, berry and plum fruit aromas backed by fine oak. This is finely expressed and has much to unfold. On palate very concentrated with dark fruits and subtly spiced by oak, this is still an elegantly proportioned wine, the tannins fine-grained and supple, and the wine showing freshness, youth and potential. This has become richer, showing more sweetness over the last 6 months, and promises to improve and develop for another 5-7 years.  Oct 2011 This wine will improve over the next 5-7 years and may be worthy of a 5 star rating in that time. Dark, deep, ruby-red with youthful purple hues to the colour, this has a concentrated, dense nose of ripe, dark berry fruits with fragrant violet notes along with subtle oak smokiness. On palate this is tight and firmly concentrated, packed with rich, dark berry fruit flavours along with plum and elements of herbs. The 14.5% alcohol is noticeable, but the fine-grained tannins and excellent acidity are in balance. This will undoubtedly unfold and develop more complexities. Made from clones 667, 777, 115 and 5 from three north-west facing blocks on the Greystone vineyard, the fruit totally destemmed and wild yeast fermented. Matured in 25% new French oak barrels. 1119 cases made. 18.0-/20 Mar 2011 RRP $38.00
