Gravel Ridge Martinborough Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 26-Oct-2012
A selection of 20 barrels from 78 made, by Matt Deller of the Fine Wine Delivery Co. Clones 114, 115, 667 and 777 from the ‘Highfold' blocks of the ‘Blue Rock' vineyard at Murdoch James, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in French oak approx. one-third new. Even ruby-red colour with light purple hues on rim. This has a softly full bouquet of light, red berry fruits along with dark red florals, herbs and oak toast nuances, showing good depth. Full-bodied, the fruit expression is a little restrained, showing flavours of savoury dark red berry and cherry fruits and underlying herbal elements, the oaking unintrusive. Some alcohol warmth is noticeable, contributing to the weight and presence on the palate. Modest tannin extraction allied to balanced acidity provides a supple liveliness and vibrancy to the mouthfeel, carrying lush, savoury red fruit notes to the finish. This is a fulsome, supple, savoury fruited Pinot Noir with some alcohol warmth and power. Match with pasta, pizza and pork over the next 3-4 years. 16.5+/20 Oct 2012 RRP $19.99 A selection of 20 barrels from 78 made. Moderately deep ruby-red colour with light purple hues on edge. This has a softly full nose with dark berry fruit aromas along with savoury herb and earth interest. Medium-bodied, the flavours are full, up-front and open, showing savoury dark berry fruits intermixed with dark herb and game notes. The acidity is bight and provides some juciness. While the extraction is modest, but there is some alcohol drive. The wine finishes with fine dry textures, the tannins emerging. This is a fresh fruited, typically savoury nuanced Martinborough Pinot Noir to serve with poultry and pork over the next 3+ years. 16.5/20 May 2012 RRP $19.95
