Goldie ‘Island’ Waiheke Island Red 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 16-Apr-2012
50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in seasoned French oak. Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with some purple hues. Full with good depth, bright dark berry and black plum aromas are expressed with dried herb, earth and tobacco-like notes. Medium-full bodied, this shows blackcurrant and herbal fruit flavours along with plum and spicy, cedary oak. The tannins are fine-grained, but firm, and along with the fresh acidity, this has an edge to the mouthfeel. The wine reveals more curranty flavours and the oak spice becomes more up-front with time in the glass. The acidity carries through to a moderately long finish with dark plum notes. This cooler-spectrum, flavoursome red has the freshness and spicy oaking to make it a match with grilled and roasted red meats over the next 4-5+ years. 17.5-/20 Apr 2012 RRP $28.00
