Goldie ‘Esslin’ Waiheke Island Merlot 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 21-Aug-2015
Dark, deep, black-hued garnet-red colour with a little bricking on the rim.  The bouquet is deep and intensely packed with layers of ripe black plum fruit complexed by savoury black earth, ink, iodine and game, along with dried herb and cedary elements. This is showing secondary development with nuances of redcurrants and pencilly oak unfolding in the glass.  Medium-full bodied, the palate features softly rich, sweet and plush flavours of savoury dark red plums and aromatic black berried fruits melded with ink, earth, game, leather and cedar.  This has a harmoniously concentrated core supported by fine-grained, powdery tannins that provide a supple structure.  The mouthfeel is soft and rounded, the core underlined by good drive, leading to an elegant, long and lingering finish with complex nuances of plum, chocolate and ink.  This is a plush, densely concentrated Merlot with waves of complex plum, earth and inky flavours and a fine, flowery tannin structure.  Match with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 8-10 years.  A selection of the best batches blended to make this wine.  100% Merlot, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 40% new French oak.  70 cases made.  18.5+/20  Aug 2015  RRP $60.00
